In Belgium, there are 271 fish processing companies that work with amongst others North Sea fish. Recent surveys have shown that companies that use or process fish and specialise in certain types of fish, above all focus on the following types: salmon (86%), cod (77%), trout (70%), herring (66%), tuna and scallops (65% each). These are followed by two types of fish that are largely sourced locally in Flanders: grey shrimp and sole, each at 64%. A large number of companies whose main activity is processing fish also indicates that they specialise in salmon and cod, the types of fish most consumed in Flanders. They are followed by trout, sole, halibut, herring, grey shrimp, tuna, eel, scampi and gambas.

In 2017, the main fishing grounds for the Flemish fisheries in terms of volume were the central North Sea (8.266 tonnes or 37%), the eastern English Channel (6.939 tonnes or 31%), the Bristol Channel and southeast Ireland or the Celtic Sea (3.080 tonnes or 14%), the southern North Sea (2.007 tonnes or 9%), the western Channel (813 tonnes or 4%) and the Gulf of Biscay (483 ton of 2%) or together 21.588 tonnes.
